Simon Grant
Respect to the Guardians past and present of Dharug country on which I live.
Simon is a Sydney based artist who has a deep love of the bush, and the broader Australian landscape. His paintings are compelled by the beautiful yet unforgiving continent that is natural Australia. He is enchanted by the bushland particularly; the ancient earth and rocks, the harsh dry scrub, and standing sentinel over it all, the majestic eucalyptus trees beneath the great Southern Hemisphere sky.
The sea and sailing are borne from a youthhood growing up in the Pacific. The ocean spray and the wind sing against the sky, caught up in the billowing sails of the vessels that kiss the waves.
These motifs occasionally stray and enter into abstract territory - sometimes obvious, sometimes not.
Simon is a great admirer of the Korean Dansaekwha movement and is deeply drawn to the Korean aesthetic. This is reflected in his moon jar paintings which strike a chord with Koreans and non-Koreans alike.
Artist Statement
"there is no finish in nature" - John Constable.
I paint because I love painting and I love the landscape. I am compelled by the dichotomies of form, line, light and dark, colour and tone geometry and spontaneity. All need to come together - whether in a landscape or seascape painting, a still life, or an abstract work. This is challenged by my spontaneous approach to the canvas. With few exceptions my paintings seldom finish up as originally planned; yet every brush stroke must end up in the right place on the canvas. And they must tell a story - of a time or place.
Many of my paintings have multiple previous paintings beneath them, their skeletons lying obviously just beneath the surface. Often they are rough, sketchy, seemingly hurried and incomplete. Unfinished. That is my intention.
My hope is that my paintings invoke a raw and honest response that allows the viewer to momentarily be elsewhere in their mind and their heart.
